The Gulf Coast Fruit Study Group was organized in 1987, to promote interest in fruit crops for the South Texas area. The concept was promoted by Bill Adams, then the Harris County Extension Agent, Dr. Leon Atlas, who, for many years, had taught an annual lecture series on fruit tree cultivation and grafting techniques at the Houston Arboretum, and Ted Teddlie, who was inspired by his work with the Harris County Master Gardener program. The plan included development of a demonstration orchard at the the Texas AgriLife Extension Service Center in Bear Creek Park, so that interested homeowners could actually see and taste the results of a successful planting. The study group would give a quarterly program at the Extension Center attracting lecturers, both amateur and professional, with special knowledge of fruit crops, host periodic excursions to local plantings, and distribute a newsletter to those interested in this field. Subsequently, plant sales were added to
the agenda.
The first newsletter was written by Ted Teddlie in 1987. Following Ted's untimely death, Yvonne Gibbs edited the newsletter for several years, and recently Dr. Ethan Natelson assumed this duty. Please visit our Newsletter Archive below to view current and past newsletters.
